Spitfire Mk.IIa P7753, the usual aircraft of Flt.Lt.L.H.Casson on charge to No.616 Squadron, Tangmere early in 1941.

The 616th Squadron established on 1938 as a bomber squadron, changed to a fighter squadron on the next year, then fought the Battle Of Britain with Spitfire Is. After the B.O.B. actually finished, the squadron received new Spitfire IIas on February 1941, and was engaged in fighter sweep missions called "circus" or "ramrod". The squadron changed to Spitfire Vbs again on July 1941.
After that, the code letter "QJ" was changed to "YQ". The Squadron received Gloster Meteors and was the first jet squadron of the RAF.
